What is Precision Metal Stamping?
Metal stamping uses high tonnage presses and stamping dies to forge sheets of metal into complete or semi-complete intricate stamped parts. Precision metal stamping improves the speed and accuracy of complex metal stamping projects by allowing the stamping, folding, drawing, or piercing of a product in a single, or series of operations.
The Right Precision Metal Stamping Process for the Job
Depending on the design and the quantities required for your metal stamping projects, different precision metal stamping processes can be used to create the intricate stamped parts you need.
For low volume precision stamping and prototype metal stamping projects, we use “single stage” tools that perform one stamping operation at a time. More complex parts and high volume precision stamping requires “progressive tooling” that advances the part through a series of dies to manufacture intricate stamped parts without the need to handle it numerous times or reset the stamping machine.
The decision to produce a part in progressive die is dependent on size, complexity and volume of production. Progressive die stamping is used to produce high volume part runs, which keeps costs significantly lower than other production types.
Due to the complexity of progressive dies, it is important to address all the factors that contribute to achieving the desired level of part quality, including blank position, pilots, blank boundary and stretch-web deformation.

In addition, a compound die will perform multiple cuts or punches in one stroke, as compared to multiple strokes. This is a very cost-effective method for metal stampings method that keeps labor and die costs down. Compound dies are often used to stamp simpler flat parts such as washers.
Progressive die stamping is preferred for complex or intricate metal stamping projects that require multiple operations (forming, hole punching, etc.). This process is the preferred precision stamping method for high volume metal stamping orders of all kinds.
